One of the (many) things I love most about travelling and holidaying in the West Country is the abundance of fresh local produce. There's always something different to take home and cook up a delicious treat. In no particular order, some of the best local foodie shops, delis and more are covered here.
The West Country is home to many top-quality food and drink producers from vineyards and distilleries to farm shops and markets - here's just a few to sample during your stay in South Devon.
Two great places for fish, shell fish and more are The Salcombe Seafood Deli and Catch of the Day in nearby Kingsbridge. The Deli serves locally caught and prepared fish and shellfish, delicious fresh crab sandwiches and more; visit their shop in Clifton Place, Salcombe. Catch of the Day in Fore Street, Kingsbridge has a range of fresh fish and is also famous for its "Salcombe Smokies"
Another choice a little further afield in Totnes (Ticklemore Street) is Cormack's fish shop, your can also shop online for for delivery to your holiday home. Totnes has its own special vibe and is a lovely day out - don’t miss a visit to the famous Ticklemore cheese shop (also in Ticklemore Street). Close to Totnes is Sharpham vineyard with its award-winning wine and cheese. Full details of tours, tastings and walks can be found on their website - you will need to book ahead - alternatively you can simply visit for a walk through the vineyard with wonderful views across the valley.
Delicious local meat is available from two wonderful traditional butchers. Colemans has been part of the fabric of Salcombe’s historic high street since the early 80's serving only the best seasonal meat from local farms, call into the shop or, if you prefer, phone and order ahead to collect when you arrive. The Salcombe Meat Company, Ashby's of Salcombe offers produce from their own farm as well other local farms "where sustainable practices and high standards of animal welfare make for great tasting meat with a trusted provenance". Visit their shop, Salcombe Road, Marlborough, Kingsbridge.
Bakery and Deli's
The Bake House, 3 Fore Street, Salcombe - croissants and more! - get there early for the best choice! 01548 842824, and at the top of town (by West End Garage) - you can park outside (something of a novelty in Salcombe), bread, hot pasties, cakes and takeaway coffee and simply drive away.
The Salcombe Delicatessen is in Fore Street and you can order online for collection or delivery, and the Island Street Deli - both stock a wide choice of delicious West Country treats and a selection of other delicacies from further afield.
Ice-cream and more!
No one can call it a holiday unless there's ice-cream! And the Salcombe Dairy has been making it "with love for over 40 years". There are amazing flavours of ice-creams, sorbets and more. You can buy online for delivery to your holiday home and of course, visit the shop in Shadycombe Road.
Salcombe Brew is home to Salcombe’s own blends of coffees - beans, ground coffee, pods and bags are available online for home delivery or at Ashby's, Salcombe Road, Marlborough, Kingsbridge
